The Vietnamese horoscope is something not many people are aware of- when we think about Asian horoscopes, we usually only consider the Chinese horoscope. But the Vietnamese Zodiac is also a powerful and interesting way of reading the future. It has been practiced for centuries and makes use of lunar calculations to predict auspicious days and events.
Following The Moon
The Vietnamese Tu Vi, or Horoscope is created on the basis of the phases of the moon. As a result, the Vietnamese New Year changes from year to year. The European seasons are usually marked by solstices and equinoxes but these are taken as the midpoints in the Vietnamese calendar. Because of this, the Vietnamese seasons usually begin about 6 weeks before their European counterparts. Like the Chinese horoscope, each year is characterized by a certain animal.
There are twelve animals in the Vietnamese horoscope - the first animal is the rat and the last one is the pig. The animals shift in rotation every 12 years and can be divided into different groups. There is one mythical creature, which is the dragon. There are also four wild animals which shun human contact- they are the rat, snake, monkey and tiger. The rest of the animals are all domesticated. Apart from these animal symbols, the Vietnamese horoscope also runs a 60 year cycle based on the twelve animals as well as ten heavenly signs called stems. Each stem when attached to a different animal will cause a slight variation in the signs and its characteristics. Each animal also has a specific time of day that suits it best.
Finding Your Sign
The very first sign is that of the Rat- it covers the years of 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2020. In general, these years are seen to be chaotic ones. People born in these years are said to be attractive to the opposite sex, charming, active and dynamic. However, they are also sensitive to light and noise and can be very fussy. They are most active at midnight and also signal a time of prosperity, since the presence of rats means there is also lots of food nearby. Its time is between 11pm and 1 am. The hours from 1 am to 3 am are known as the Ox hours. The Ox years are 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009 and 2021. The Ox symbolizes industriousness and patience- people born in these years are known for their hard work and steady strength. The Ox is also associated with spring and agriculture. People born in the years of the Ox can be very stubborn if they are crossed.
The next animal is the Tiger and their time is from 3 am to 5 am- it governs the years 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 and 2022. This is the most aggressive of all the signs- while these people can be flexible, they are also quick to lose their temper. The Tiger is generally associated with dark and stormy weather. The years of the Cat are 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and 2023 and they govern the hours from 5 am to 7 am. Cats are smooth talkers and they are also patient- they will wait for the right opportunity before they pounce! They are also ambitious and very talented. People born under the Cat will be in constant conflict with those born under the Rat.
The hours of 7 am to 9 am are dedicated to the Dragon- it is seen as the only sacred symbol in the zodiac and rules the years of 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. People born under this sign can be very energetic and sincere- however they can also be stubborn and they can easily lose their temper. While they are symbols of individual prosperity and power, years of the dragon are often characterized by famine. The next symbol is the Snake- it governs the hours of 9 am to 11 am and the years of 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 and 2025. These people are known to be very wise but they speak very little. While they can be calm and profound at times, they also have the ability to be cruel, dangerous and short-tempered.
The years of 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014 and 2026 and the hours 11 am to 1 pm are ruled by the Horse. These people are pure, noble and wise and have the added asset of alertness and strength. This sign is generally considered to be the most beautiful in the whole zodiac- on the downside, these people don't listen to advice and can be quick-tempered. The next animal is the Goat, ruling the years of 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027 and the hours of 1 pm to 3 pm. Shy and compassionate, these people are also unassertive and can be very clumsy in their speech and communicative skills. They are often taken advantage of. The hours of 3 pm to 5 pm are for the Monkey. This animal is associated with the years 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016 and 2028 and is curious, clever but inconsistent. The next sign is that of the only bird, the Rooster- it governs the years of 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017 and 2029 and the hours of 5 pm to 7pm. People born under this sign are seen to be hard workers, intelligent with a literary bend of mind.
The second last symbol is the Dog - it governs the years of 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 and 2030 and the hours of 7 pm to 9 pm. These people are secure and loyal- the sign itself portends future prosperity. The final sign is the Pig- its hours are 9 pm to 11 pm and the years 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019 and 2031. These people can be honest, gallant and courageous- however they can also be short tempered, headstrong and very impulsive.
