Home Remedies for Toothache – Pain Relief

A toothache is any soreness, discomfort or pain within or around a tooth, signifying irritation, and swelling, reddening and possible infection with a possibility of abscess. When tooth decay penetrates the pulp chamber or reaches in its close proximity that contains the nerve endings and tiny blood vessels, a toothache starts emerging.

Dental cavity is the most common cause of toothache. Dental cavities are holes in the two outer layers of the tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel. Certain bacteria in the mouth that convert simple sugars to acid causing dental cavities. This acid softens and dissolves the enamel and dentin creating cavities.

Clove oil or oil of cloves is a mild anesthetic and applied to the cavity of the decayed tooth provides instant pain relief from the toothache. Oil of oregano on the paining tooth is also nearly as effective.

Cook asparagus root in wine, cool put in the mouth for a few minutes and spit out, can also use asparagus juice with no wine.

Boil 5-6 cloves and 2- inch bark of a Margosa tree (Neem) in 1 cup of water. Strain and bottle. Store this in the fridge. Smear this decoction on the affected tooth. It is an effective toothache remedy.

Add a cup of water to about 5gms of fresh peppermint and half a tablespoon of salt. Boil this, and when the water turns lukewarm, gargle and drink it, as the solution is a good pain killer and is also beneficial for headaches apart from toothache.

Mix half a teaspoon of asafetida with a bit of lime juice so as to form a paste. Make it lukewarm and apply the mixture with a cotton ball.

From the bark of bay berry, along with vinegar, can be made into a paste. Such paste, applied to the aching tooth, as another alternative home remedy for toothache can alleviate the pain and discomfort. For gum strengthening, it is beneficial in applying the same bay berry bark paste to the gums.

Put several pieces of ice into a plastic bag and use it as a cold compress for your mouth. Keep in mind that a frozen bag of vegetables, such as peas, may work out better. The reason is because they can conform to the shape of your mouth easier than ice cubes can and they are still cold enough to help provide relief. Do this several times daily.

Vanilla extracts also work wonders as a home remedy for toothache. But, a source says that almond extracts works better for it contains 2% more alcohol against the 35% alcohol content of the vanilla extract. This works by dipping a ball of cotton in the extract soon afterward placing it on top of the affected tooth.
