Elliptical Machines: What Makes them Different

In many gyms, elliptical machines are the most piece of equipment. Even though there are skeptics who right off ellipticals as "fads", they are actually popular because they are superior to the competition. These are the three key ways in which elliptical machines crush the competition: They work the entire body. The newer elliptical machines exercise the muscles of the lower and upper body simultaneously, for an unparalleled full-body workout. This not only helps build healthy muscle mass throughout the entire body, but it also promotes coordination (because the arms and legs are moving simultaneously) and better balance. And, because the arms and the legs are sharing the work, elliptical machines also help correct the muscle imbalances that are common with our modern, sedentary lives. They build true cardiovascular endurance. Most exercise machines work primarily the lower body. This can result in uneven training and a "false" sense of cardiovascular endurance, because the upper body is relatively weak and under-trained, when compared to the legs. Elliptical machines solve this problem by distributing the resistance between the upper and lower body, which results in a truly optimal cardiovascular workout-and true muscular endurance throughout the entire body. They're easier on the joints. The oval motion of elliptical machines is unique, in that it most closely replicates the full natural motion of our knee and hip joints. This "elliptical" pattern of movement practically eliminates the impact stress associated with activities such as walking and running, while providing the weight-bearing exercise that is necessary to build healthy joints and bones. They're easy on the mind as well. The steady, smooth, and even motion of elliptical machines offers users the ability to enjoy watching TV, reading books, and enjoying music, without feeling the stressful effects of pain or feeling winded during the workout. Also, it is easy to feel safe and secure while using ellipticals (unlike exercise machines such as treadmills). And finally, they trigger "relaxation response" that is used to achieve peace in activities such as meditation.
