There are a number of treatments of breast cancer options for women such as radiation therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, biological therapy and hormone therapy. Treatments of breast cancer are decided by first determining the stage of cancer.
All the cancer treatments can be classified into two categories:
- Local Therapies:
Surgeries and radiation therapies are considered as local treatments. They are meant to remove or destroy cancer within the breast. It is also used to control the cancer from moving into other areas and if it already has then they are used to control cancer in those areas.
- Systemic Therapy:
Systemic therapies include chemotherapy, biological therapy and hormone therapy. These therapies are used to enter the bloodstream and wipe out or control cancer throughout the body. Also at times the doctors recommend going through systemic therapy in order to reduce in size the tumor before surgery. Some people also undergo systemic therapy after surgery to stop the cancer from developing again.
Side effects of these treatments:
Cancer itself comes with a lot of side effects and so does its treatment. The treatments are heavy enough to damage healthy cells and tissues therefore creating side effects. Side effects are dependant upon the stage/level of breast cancer and the degree of its treatment. Side effects are not always the same for everyone and they cannot be predicted.
